So much frustration over this, but after much perseverance, and lots of Googling, and wondering if I could afford repairs - or a new laptop even - my keyboard Toshiba Satellite LS - 6yrs old is now functioning correctly. The culprit, as others have discovered, was the unrequested installation of Synaptics Lenovo pointing device, the icon for which appeared in the toolbox subsequent to the Windows 10 update on 16th March, As for getting rid - difficult. Unfortunately it wasn't listed in my favourite uninstaller software, Revo, so I messed about in the registry and Programmes, finally using Windows uninstaller when it appeared there - not under Lenovo, but Synaptics.
Incidentally, though I don't think it is really relevant, the only keys which stopped functioning were digits 1 to 4, and the spacebar. The Keypad wasn't affected. Hi Havelock Ditto. My spacebar, number 1 etc missing.
Dis-sparing as trying to update end of year software. This fix worked perfectly, keyboard perfectly fine and pointer too. I would add that yesterday p. Thank you for this. Been trying everything. Probably caused more harm than good, but unable to keep using FN with the space bar when typing. I removed the pointer device and sorted straight away. Now using a seperate mouse as touchpad not working. Can live with that. Thanks again.

I used Havelock's solution on April 7, and it solved the problem. Unfortunately this morning the problem was back. I used Havelock's solution again uninstalling the Synaptics Lenovo App but after several restarts, a shut down and start but the problem is persisting even though the Synaptics App is not shown as present.
